Abstract

The values on savings and simple ways of life have been a normal practice in everyday life of the Chinese in Brunei. Since their early history of migration, their involvement in business as a means of economic activities continues until today.  The Chinese population in Brunei and their synonym with business is not something new as it also happens in many parts of the world.  This research investigates the relevance of savings and Chinese culture of simple way of life as one of the main advantages in establishing a business.  The two values were shared within the community which positively lead to a community with a strong financial capacity which again became strong support to Chinese business. A total of eleven Chinese business people (labelled as IC) from different backgrounds of clans (dialects) and beliefs, have been selected as informants in this study. In-depth interview method was used as the main method of unlocking some questions about perceptions and cultural values with the informants. This study has proved that there is a relation between the two values and positively influence their capacity in setting up a business in the form of business capital.
