Abstract

The main focus of this study is on the relationship between the perception of the quality of life which is conceptualized by the administrative and government agents (in the macro level) with the perception constructed by the world view of the Bidayuh community themselves (micro level structure). The difference between the views is the theoretical gap to be explored by the  researchers in this study. Thus, this study employs an interpretive methodology featuring abductive logic based on ontological idealism and social constructionist epistemology. This study
was done in the district of Serian in Sarawak which is about 64 kilometers to the south of Kuching town and is one of the four districts under the administration of the Samarahan Division. A total of 100 respondents was involved in this study chosen using the non-probability sampling methods which is made up of three aspects namely quota sampling, purposive sampling and theoretical sampling. The size of the study samples is achieved through the continuous assessments on the aspect of theoretical saturation. The data in this study is accumulated through indepth interviews and informal group discussions. This study confirms that there
exists a difference in the worldview aspect of the quality of life between those living close to town and those living in the outskirts. The quality of life in this study is separated into seven categories and which are ranked by the participants in order of importance. Those living close to town ranked ability as the main priority, followed by the categories of participation, empowerment, safety and security, psychological and physical wellbeing, family relationships and in last
place community, resources and the environment. On the other hand the respondents living in the outskirts ranked safety and security as most important, followed by the categories of community, resources and the environment, physical and psychological wellbeing, family relationships, participation, ability and in the last place empowerment. Though, the worldview category garnered different responses from those living close to town and those living in the outskirts, the respondent’s interpretation of the various themes and categories encompassing the
study are almost the same.
