Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the involvement and the problems of illegal boats in the maritime economic activities in Sabah waters. Sabah has a strategic position and is surrounded by seas such as the South China Sea, Sulu Sea, and the Celebes Sea. The Sulu Sea is a sea located in the southwestern part of the Philippines and separated by the South China Sea by Palawan and from the Celebes Sea in the southeast by the Sulu Archipelago. Sea is important in terms of shipping and trade routes since time immemorial and is rich in marine resources. Therefore, Malaysian waters including Sabah waters are exposed to the threat, for example, illegal movement of people, illegal fishermen, smuggling, and others. This led to a study on the involvement, and the problems of the illegal boat which is important because of its strategic factors above. The study involved library research and interviews method to obtain information related to the involvement and the problems faced and the operations performed by maritime authorities in safeguarding the country's maritime zone, especially in Sabah waters.
