Abstract

The aims of this study are to investigate the functions of Malay and Madurese customs as a media for conflict resolution. It describes how the customs work in the mediation and what are the responses of West Kalimantan communities towards the conflict resolution. The research method used is ethnographic multiple side studies. The findings are: (1) the Malay and Madurese custom that is used for the conflict resolution is mutual  consultation (musyawarah); (2) Mutual consultation has effectively been deployed only to resolve the small scale conflict, whereas the large conflict used to be surrendered to the police; (3) Mutual consultation which involved the village head in the traditional conflict management has been deployed as soon as a conflict occurs; (4) the consultation is based on Islamic spirit; (5) the consultation has been used not only to stop the conflict, but is used also as a preventive effort to avoid the wider conflict escalation (6) Malay-Madurese and non Malay-Madurese in West Kalimantan have conveniently been accepting costums as the media for the conflict resolution. However, if a conflict involved Dayak community, the media for the conflict resolution has to be accordance with their custom.
