Abstract

This study is on the history of Port Sandakan and surrounding ports in North Borneo. Sandakan functioned as one of the primary port for the product of the plantation. Sandakan was developed from Elopura, a small entreport which was considered as unpromising because it was not located in the major trade lanes and there was no major trade product. At the beginning of the 1900s, British developed and modernized it into Sandakan port which soon known to the public as the trading centre of tobacco and rubber which later emerged as the main port for timber. Sandakan became important mainly due to the British control, the increasing demand of the global market and the impact of the industrial revolution to the maritime trading. It is assumed that even though Sandakan was located in the eastern part of Borneo which is considered the 'periphery' in the Southeast Asian region, it was externally oriented. The study examines the development of Sandakan from a small insignificant port to one of the main maritime trading centre.
