Abstract

Malaysian fishing industry developed rapidly in the present time. This rapid development must be seen from the aspect of the increment of the boats, fishing tools and increased of catch in Malaysia. This achievement is the product of modernization process which is continually administered by Jabatan Perikanan Malaysia. The government encourages all the fishermen to make use the modern instruments such sonar, echosaunder, GPS and communication tools. This improvement enables them to catch fish from the deep sea with more facility which in return increases the catch. However, the government find shortage on the availability of local fishers. To address this problem the government has to grant a permit to employers to employ foreign fishermen. This article discusses the involvement of Filipino fishers in Trawl base-fishing industry in Kudat, Sabah. The discussion includes the background of fishing industry in Kudat, the process of the involvement of Filipino fishers, the push and pull factors among Filipinos in Sabah, the Filipino fishing activities and the salary system used by the local employers in hiring the Filipino fishers.
