The Malaysian Chinese poets born in 1960s witness the country’s historical transformation and possess a global perspective, and also inherit creative nourishment from the former writers in the development of literature. Therefore, a rich cultural background and a broad vision for poetic aesthetics are provided, resulting in a great output and a comprehensive expression of their poetry. This paper aims to outline the critical consciousness and core themes of Lew Yok Long’s poem, as one of the 1960sborn Malaysian Chinese poets, by examining his profound concerns for culture, nation, and humanity. When inheriting the tradition of the main poet associations of the 1970s, which emphasised depicting the “cultural chinese” and classical chinese imagery, Lew Yok Long who born in 1960s transforms his imagery into localised writing that directly confronts local consciousness. This happens because of the complex elements such as national identity and the nation’s development or changes among the Malaysian Chinese. He mainly focuses on contemporary political and social issues, ethnic problems and controversies, and also writes on historical, cultural, and social realities. His poetry avoids sacrificing poetic quality due to excessive narrative, often employing fresh perspectives.
