History

The Journal of Chinese Literature and Culture (JCLC) is one of the two academic journals published by the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya. The department is internationally recognised as a leading centre for teaching, research, and innovation in Sinology and Chinese studies.

During the 2010s, JCLC published influential scholarship on language policy, nationbuilding, translation studies, and the interactions between the state and traditional Chinese enterprises. The journal also broadened its scope to include studies on the Chinese diaspora, covering topics such as religion, economics, education, family businesses, and identity formation.

From the late 2010s into the 2020s, JCLC continued to document important historical and cultural developments, featuring widely cited research on alternative media, Malaysian Chinese-language cinema, the history of the Cantonese community in the Klang Valley, and the development of Malaysian Buddhist educational institutions.

Today, JCLC remains based in the Department of Chinese Studies at Universiti Malaya and is supported by an International Advisory Board comprising distinguished scholars from Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Singapore, and the United States, reflecting its strong regional and international academic network.
