Women's Choice in an Ethical Predicament: A Study of Lake Like a Mirror From The Perspective of Ethical Literary Criticism

Abstract

《湖面如镜》是马来西亚华文女性作家贺淑芳的短篇小说集。集中九篇作品 以生活在马来西亚的女性为代表，着眼于爱情、婚姻、家庭、职场、宗教、种族 等多个领域，描写出她们深陷于压抑、窒息的伦理环境下，基于各自漂泊又边缘 的伦理身份，在挣扎与纠结中做出的伦理选择。贺淑芳将公共议题搬进小说，在 书写中延续指控，为女性群体发声，担负起写作者的伦理责任。小说集对女性议 题的犀利思考与高度的自我指涉，表现了作家独特的女性意识和她对女性议题的 深切关注，对当代女性打破性别压迫，重建被剥夺的话语权具有重要的现实意义。

Lake Like a Mirroris a collection of short stories by Malaysian Chinese female writer Ho Sok Fong. The nine works in the collection are represented by women living in Malaysia, focusing on love, marriage, family, workplace, religion, race and other fields, describing the ethical choices they make in the struggle and entanglements based on their wandering and marginal ethical identities under the oppressive and suffocating ethical environment. Ho Sok Fong brings public issues into the novel, continues the accusation in the writing, speaks for the female group, and shoulders the ethical responsibility of the writer. The sharp thinking and high self-reference on women’s issues in the collection of novels show the writer’s unique female consciousness and her deep concern for women's issues, which has important practical significance for contemporary women to break gender oppression and rebuild the deprived right to speak.
