Abstract

The settlement of the Arab society of the Syed descendants in Tawau, Sabah had begun since the administration of the British North Borneo Chartered Company (BNBC). They were said to be originated from Hadralmaut, near to Yaman in Arab Peninsular. The settlement of the society had brought great impact on the social aspect of the local society especially pertaining to the propagation and establishment of Islam. Besides becoming religious leaders, they were the frontiers in openning settlements and developing the society (especially among Muslims) in Tawau, Sabah. Their leadership is prevalent even to this day. This study is based on interviews conducted especially with the leaders and relatives of the Syed family. Archive and library research were also deployed in completing this study.
