Abstract

Mat Salleh (Paduka Muhammad Salleh Datu Balu) or Paduka Mat Salleh’s struggle
against the North Borneo Chartered Company (NBCC) was indeed a meaningful
struggle in the history of Sabah. This was because his struggle became the
inspiration to other warriors to fight against the Colonial Power. Paduka Mat Salleh
can be regarded as the only Muslim warrior in Sabah who fought for the welfare
and interest of the people. This study is based on historical sources and the oppinion
of historians about the role of Islam in shaping the idea and platform of his struggle.
The analysis will touch on the extent of Paduka Mat Salleh’s struggle is in line with
Islam. All of these opinions are based on the Islamic worldview.
